FAQ
Most of us will need some guidance when trying to build something; it takes a rare type of person to figure out how to correctly build something complex on their own. For those trying to build a kayak, there will be some frequently asked questions, about everything from what kind of kayak to build to where to buy materials to how to actually fit the pieces together. There are a number of resources available for those making a kayak. As it is for many other things, the internet is a good tool for kayak builders. There are numerous websites that sell plans for different types of kayaks, books and even DVDs about building a kayak. Other websites have discussion boards where experienced kayak makers can share tips and novice builders can ask questions.
There are sites that discuss the different types of kayaks, from those that are essentially the same design as the original kayaks to those that are made from fiberglass. The first kayaks were made of whalebone and sealskin; today, wood or aluminum has replaced whalebone to make a frame covered by nylon or canvas instead of sealskin. Other types of kayaks are made with wood, either thin strips or specially cut pieces glued together and covered with fiberglass and epoxy. The most popular type of mass-produced kayak is made of polyethylene (a common commercial plastic) poured into a mold. This method is only used commercially because of the cost of the machinery used, just as pouring fiberglass into a mold is a mainly mass-production scheme.
For those who do want to build their own kayak, find materials can be an issue. You will most likely have to go to a marine supply store, boatyard, or lumberyard to buy materials that are close to what you need, and modify them to suit your purpose. And of course, there are sites that sell kayak making materials. These sites, along with those that discuss types and offer advice about building kayaks, should be able to answer any FAQ’s about kayak building.
